Need your help IN JACKSONVILLE with preparations for the Annual Grand Communication in Orlando

May 20, 2012 Posted by MA1112-Secretary

Brothers,

I just got off the phone with John and he asked for some additional help as follows:

On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 9 AM, Need 4 people to help with organizing and staging furniture and supplies at the Grand Lodge Building downtown Jacksonville.

On Wednesday, May 23, at 8:30 AM Need 10-12 people to load the truck for transport from Jacksonville for the AGC.

Then, the following week, on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 8:30 AM, Need 10-12 people to unload the truck when it returns to Jacksonville.

If you can assist on any or all of these days, please let John know. Call John Palumbo at 904 868-4398

Worshipful Masters, Please actively contact the members of your lodge and seek out some brothers who can assist. Do it now, please.

If each Master were to find and designate 1 brother to assist we would have more than enough to accomplish this project and we wouldn’t have to continue to wear out the few who always show up.

 Fraternally,

Pat

“Let’s Learn To Communicate Better Together!”

How Do You Do That?

May 19, 2012 Posted by MA1112-Secretary

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a set of instructions handy to help you master the use of certain technologies? One of the biggest challenges facing our fraternity is overcoming the barriers of thought that keep us from using modern technologies to spread our message over the internet. There have been a brave few brothers in recent years who have carried the torch and forged new paths for us to follow. I believe we are at a time when we need to put the tools into the hands of all our brothers.

You will notice that I have been adding pictures and comments to this website about events that I have attended over the past few weeks. I’m certainly no expert on blogging but I do have a knack for figuring out technical challenges. We are in a world where there are no experts but everybody is an expert. Yep, you read that right. There is not a single soul who is an expert on all areas of human knowledge. But, each soul alive today is an expert on something. So, the challenge then is to learn to use the tools of communication to share your expertise.

Our own Poet Laureate of Jacksonville, RW Richard Ivy Lanier has been heard to say, “When you’re through learning, you’re through.” If this is true then you owe it to yourself to become more proficient in this relatively new form of communication. I’ve heard many brothers say stuff like, “I don’t need all that fancy stuff. I just need to dial a phone number,” or “I don’t even have a computer. My wife gets my email.” It’s this kind of thinking that limits our ability to communicate and share information within and without the fraternity.

I’ve been adding content to this website and pushing the information out to mailboxes and other social media in the hopes that we will add more and more to the global conversation about Masonry. Speaking of social media, have you signed up for any free accounts that will open your communications world? I’m talking about Facebook, Twitter, LinkIn, Google+, etc. Note the buttons at the bottom of each post. You can use these to share articles and pictures with others in your social circles. And, there is no “right” one. They all have their advantages and disadvantages as well as their specialized audiences. But, to learn this you will have to take the plunge and do like young people do, “play!!!” Don’t worry about how to do it right. Just do it!

Here’s a great overview and if you have a business, it will come in handy. Check out this ebook. While you’re at it, take a look at some of the content on make use of. They have many “how to” and information articles about the internet. Bookmark their site and visit regularly. You can even sign up for their email list and get a notification once or twice a month about new content and some great deals.

The key thing about using your computer and mobile device for communicating with others is to notice what the results are and if you don’t get the result you want, change the communication until you do.

Look for more information on specific topics to appear on this website under the heading, “How Do You…?” You will find it to the left of this article in the sidebar. Check it out.

As always, if you have comments or questions, look for the comment link below and share your expertise or your search for knowledge.

Pat

2012-05-17 Hyde Park No. 370 – MM Degree

May 18, 2012 Posted by MA1112-Secretary

Front L-to-R: RW Wilmer Atwell, W Bobby Que, Bro. Alberto Felizmena, W Freddie Velasco, 2nd Row L-to-R: RH Corey Kosciusko, W Bill Crime, RW Rudy Boatright, RW Wiley Hart, Bro Todd O. Jennings, Bro. Reynaldo Viray, Back Row L-to-R: W Wayne Williams, RW Alan McQuaig, W Brad Yoder, W Tony Chavez, Bro Lawrence Griffin, W Mike Stoinoff

In spite of the thunderstorms, brothers from six local lodges as well as one visiting brother from Pennsylvania gathered to confer the MM Degree on FC Brother Alberto Felizmena. The evening began with fellowship and giving thanks for our many blessings. The lecture was performed by RW Wilmer Atwell and the charge delivered by W Tony Chavez. Finally, RW Rudy Boatright and RW Alan McQuaig presented Brother Felizmena with his bible and masonic monitor. It was an enjoyable evening with plenty of fun and fellowship as we turned in our labors.

2012-05-15 Barnett Lodge No. 187

Front L-to-R: Bros. John Broughton, Joshua Card, John Fails, Joshua Fitchett, Kaream Johnson, James Neal, Gale Arnold, John Santiago. Center L-to-R: Bros. Clint Mcquarry, Victor Towns (hat), Bruce Ford, Shawn Shannon, Back L-to-R: W Chris Glass, Bro Todd O. Jennings.

The evening began as usual with good fellowship. Five lodges were represented by approximately 35 or so brothers. We came together to break bread and get on with some work. After greeting many brothers, some that I had not seen in quite a while, we took time to give thanks for our many blessings. We then feasted on Sheppard’s Pie with a side salad. Since we were at Barnett Lodge, we were greeted by a plethora of the most delightful sweets for dessert.

After dinner, we retired to the lodge room for labor. Brother Victor Towns presided in the East and with the able assistance of Brother Dave Thomas managed to turn in a respectable performance. The remainder of the degree team followed suit and all ears were at the door to make sure the Georgia work stayed outside.

The new Fellowcrafts were treated to a fine lecture by RW Robby Stokes of Solomon Lodge no. 20. The Charge was delivered in fine fashion by Brother Shawn Shannon of Barnett Lodge. Many positive comments were made by brothers throughout the lodge as well as the FC brothers. The lodge was closed in Due Form and harmony prevailed.

New Master Masons at Orange Park

Front Row L-to-R: Bros. Matthew Moore, Bruce Hanson, Lance Norman 2nd Row L-to_R: Bros Richard Bilyard, Sr., John Moore, RW Patrick Farrell, W Duane Trump, RWDDGM Frank Kleese, RH Corey Kosciusko Back Row L-to-R: Bro Maleko Berrier, RW Rudy Boatright, Bro Richard Bilyard II

Last month, April 30th, we raised two new Master Masons at Orange Park Lodge. It was especially meaningful for Brother John Moore, member of Riverview Lodge, because he was able to raise his grandson, Matthew Moore. W Bill Maule performed the part of King Solomon before turning over the honors to Bro Moore.

Under the category of Honored Guests we were pleased to host RWDDGM Frank Kleese. The 1st part of the degree was conferred by W Duane Trump, Master of Orange Park Lodge. In the 2nd half, the District Instructor for the 12th District, RH Corey Kosciusko performed the part of King Solomon. The lecture was delivered by Bro Mark Balester and the Charge by RW Patrick Farrell.

Open Books – 4/28/2012

April 28, 2012 Posted by MA1112-Secretary

Brothers,

RW Ken Hall, PDDGM 13th District

Bro. Bob Welch, SW Middleburg Lodge No. 107

Today we had the books open at Orange Park Lodge for the benefit of the lodges in the Zone 3. There were close to 20 brothers in attendance. See the photos here for some happy and studious masons. This was a wonderful opportunity to see the actual  words. We have many learned brothers in our lodges but sometimes the work gets a bit off as it gets passed down. By regular and frequent review of the written words a brother can ensure that he has a firm grasp of the actual words and meaning of the ritual.

RH Corey Kosciusko, D.I. of the 12th District

I have traveled to many lodges in our two districts over the years and witnessed both good and bad work. I’ve often heard brothers give excuses that they haven’t done a particular role in a long time. Yet, a review of their recent behavior would doubtless reveal relatively few actual practices and likely no reference to the actual written work in preparation. Sadly, having access to the written work is a tremendous benefit often under-used. This is not to say that any brothers are intentionally neglectful. Rather, they are trusting other members of their lodges who themselves have never actually seen the written work. The good news is that we have the books open each and every month on the same weekend. Any Master Mason can attend and see for himself the words and accompanying instructions.

RH Mark Manuz, District Instructor, 13th District

We have been very fortunate to have many fine instructors and mentors in the work. RH Kosciusko provides exemplary leadership in his mastery of the work. Likewise, RH Mark Manuz carries on the tradition of excellence in the 13th District. Both were present for the open books today. These brothers dedicate many hours to teaching and helping the lodges in their respective districts to perform the work to the highest degree of proficiency. RW Scooter Barr, Zone 3 Committee on Work was also in attendance and has dedicated many years to teaching the work.

W Eddie Bide, PM Mandarin Lodge No. 343

RW Bob Isgan and Bro. Bill Autro, JW Cabul Lodge No. 116

Bro. John Gay

Bro. Bob Thiele, S.S. of Cabul Lodge No. 116

On this particular Saturday morning we find several brothers have made the long trek from Cabul Lodge No. 116. Brother Bob Thiele, the current Senior Steward is studying the Catechisms in the hope that he will convey unchanged the proper words to his students. RW Bob Isgan spent several hours of his time sharing his experience with his lodge brother, Bill Autro, JW of Cabul Lodge No. 116. Mandarin Lodge was represented by W Eddie Bides who was studying lectures to help his lodge confer quality work. In another corner we find RH Corey Kosciusko helping Brother John Gay to get up to speed with his work and knock some of the cobwebs loose.

Bro. Mark Balester, Chaplain, Orange Park Lodge No. 267

After a few hours of reviewing the written work, a small group of brothers headed into the lodge room to practice floorwork. Brother Mark Balester  volunteered to sit in the East for the MM degree.  It truly was an outstanding learning opportunity. When we came out of the lodge room after a few hours, the dining room was dark and the books were put up. It was a good day of Masonic learning and fellowship.

A look at the stats. Many visits. Few comments.

I can’t tell how many of these are from me moving around the site and making changes and such. But, a few people have stopped by. This is a start.

How do you think we can use this forum to deal with some of the issues facing our lodges? Are you willing to explore how this tool may facilitate communication with our newer members?
